Causes
Strep throat can be caused by either group A beta - hemolytic streptococcus bacteria or by group C or group G - A beta - hemolytic streptococcus bacteria. These three groups of bacteria come under the category of streptococcal bacteria. Strep throat is contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another through the air when an infected individual sneezes or it can even be picked up from commonly used objects such as spoons, forks, and other kitchen utensils. As a result of a strep throat infection, the tonsils may also swell and become painful.
People who have been affected with strep throat bacteria usually get sick within six days of being exposed to the bacteria.There are a number of different strains of strep that can cause other conditions as well apart from strep throat. One strain of strep can cause a condition known as scarlet fever, that usually affects children.
Strep throat is also more commonly seen amongst children and teens than in adults and the infection is generally transmitted during large gatherings of students in closed spaces.
